hypercorrections

go look it up. it's one of my biggest pet peeves. now i'm noticing people doing grammatical hypercorrections:



congratulations, you've discovered the en and em dashes! now go learn when to use them!
i visited the diebenkorn show at the san jose art museum this weekend and their designer appeared to have run Find and Replace 'hyphen' with 'em dash'. it was jarring and totally JV. stop. now. please. thanks :)
